Description: This FDC was issued to commemorate the 2nd International Asian Hornbill Workshop held during 12th - 18th April 1996. The purposeof the workshop was to promote preservation of Asian tropical forests and the endangered hornbills. The cancellation seal has emblem of Rhinoceros Hornbill and it is cancelled at Bangkok, the capital of Thailand on 12-02-1996. The cover depicts the picture of Rhinoceros Hornbill.


Rhinoceros Hornbill - Buceros rhinoceros

Status: Near Threatened

Habitat: Brunei Darussalam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore & Thailand.(lowland ever green forest)

Threats: Deforestation, logging and hunting for meat, its feathers and its casque, which can be carved into an ornament.

Diet: Fruit, insects, small reptiles, rodents and smaller birds.  
 
Life Span: 30 years

Breeding:  Monogamous

Facts:
The Rhinoceros Hornbill is the state bird of the Malaysian state of Sarawak.
For some Dayak people, it represents their war god, Singalang Burong.

Status: Near Threatened

Habitat: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Threats: Deforestation and logging.

Diet: Fruits, insects, snakes, lizards and small birds.
  







 


Rufous Necked Hornbill


Rufous-necked Hornbill -  Aceros nipalensis

Status: Vulnerable

Habitat: Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal,  Thailand, Tibet,Vietnam.

Threats: Hunting and habitat loss

Diet: Fruits, figs, insects, lizards and small birds.

Facts:
Wildlife Trust of India introduced a programme for replacing the use of real beaks with fibre-made replicas for the tribals.
The Rufous-necked Hornbill communities move seasonally between one forested area to another to avail of the differing abundance of fruiting trees due to local conditions.

Status: Vulnerable

Habitat: Burma, Malaysia, Thailand

Threats: Deforestation and hunting.

Diet: Fruits, insects and small animals.

Breeding:  In groups
